Formal Packing

Before you jet off and have fun at your holiday destination, the best thing to do is to draw up a checklist of items you have packed and items you plan to leave out. A large majority of holiday goers do tend to pack the wrong items of clothing for their intended destination, believe it or not, it does happen! Most importantly check that you have the essentials packed which are easily overlooked.

1. Check the weather of your desired destination. This will give you an indication on what you need and to pack.

2. Bring clothes that are suitable for the activities during your holiday. For example, if you anticipate a lot of walking due to sight-seeing or alot of fine dining, pack a pair of comfortable shoes, shirts, trousers or ties. Also, pack an umbrella as the weather could turn for the worst at any time!

3. If you are planning to pack pieces of formal clothing, it is always best to pack 2 sets as accidents can always happen. You never know, someone could spill their red wine all over your expensive formal trousers which can be a bit of a nightmare!

4. Make sure your toiletries bag is complete with all your essentials. Who knows, it might be difficult to find your favourite shaving cream while shopping on holiday. If you are flying, put your toiletries in your hand luggage rather than your big pieces of luggage.

5. A good idea is to bring some medicine such as aspirins, travel sickness pills and medicine for a sore throat. Again, getting to the doctors on holiday may not be so straight-forward.

6. If you are flying, it is not uncommon that your luggage may get lost in transition. To avoid having to wear the same clothes for days, pack an extra set of clothes in your hand luggage so that you have a change of clothes while waiting for your luggage to arrive.

7. Travel light and leave some space in your luggage. Who knows, you may be carrying loads of souvenirs from your holiday back home.

8. Use traveler’s checks where ever possible instead of cash. They are safer and more convenient for traveling.

9. Finally, don’t worry if you have forgotten a thing or two. Most importantly the idea of a holiday is to have fun

Mens TailorsLooking good and knowing that you look good is a wonderful feeling. This applies not only to women, but to men also. Now we are in the era of ready-to-wear garments such as mens jackets and suits, most men will have no reason to look for a good tailor, which can often be very costly.

Choosing the right tailor can be pretty hard since there are not that many tailors around. But most importantly, once you find a tailor you like, has a good reputation and can cater to your suiting needs, I suggest you try remembering his name and his address!

Another factor to consider while choosing a tailor is that you must feel comfortable with his work. You must be able to tell your tailor the kind of look you are looking for and he must be able to deliver a very high standard of work. If you are willing to spend the extra cash on a tailor, a few things to keep in mind is to make sure that the tailor is knowledgeable about his craft and is also able to give you additional advice and suggestions about mens formal suits, the best shirts to buy and mens fashion.

It may take a while for you to find the perfect tailor and the more popular and expensive tailors might not even be the ones that you’re looking for! Another great point to consider is if they have been in the business longer than you have lived, this often shows that they are probably more reputable than other newer tailors to emerge on the market and they may have a bigger client base which is always interesting to look at.

So to find your perfect tailor, try some old methods of primary and secondary research! Ask around and conduct research online. Once you feel you have done enough research, visit their outlets and see for yourself if their reputation is the same as what you researched!

If you love designer fashion but dread the huge hole you burn through your pocket each time you make a purchase, here’s good news for you!

Liz Claiborne Inc. recently announced that John Bartlett has been tapped to become the creative director for its men’s fashion sportswear line.  This equals to mass-market clothes with a better fabric and make, not to mention a subtle shift in design.  John’s new line of menswear, aptly named ‘Claiborne by John Bartlett’, is expected to hit retail stores in spring 2009.

The Cincinnati native designer, a two-time CFDA and Perry Ellis Menswear award winner, is expected to retain his newly opened retail store in the West Village. Mr. Bartlett commented on the announcement, “I am excited to infuse Claiborne with a strong DNA and lead the brand in a new and exciting direction. My goal is to create an enticing line at affordable prices that men will find irresistible. The Claiborne name has a strong legacy and I intend on honouring that while transforming the men’s line to address a great opportunity in the better men’s market.”

8 Men’s Fashion Faux Pas to Avoid

Men’s Casual FashionThey say clothes make the man but how many of men believe they’ve got serious style when they’re walking around in a shirt and tie from the early 90s teamed with a pair of socks with sandals? There’s no denying that men’s fashion faux pas are legendary.

Unlike women, men have a tendency to go for whatever that is easy and comfortable. Hence, they often overlook the small details which actually matters the most if you want to dress for success.

Here’s a look at the fashion bloopers that men often make and should be avoided at all cost:

1. Wearing Socks With Sandals
Dude, this definitely proves your lack of men’s style. The only place that you can wear socks with sandals and not get labelled as a fashion offender is in the privacy of your home. Do not, I repeat “DO NOT” ever step outside your home looking this way.

2. Too Much Jewellery
Now, who said it was okay to wear as much jewellery as Mr T? A wedding band and a watch is all you need. Do yourself a favour and don’t pile on those gold neck chains, bracelets, body or facial piercings. They make you look heinous.

3. Wrong Length Trousers
Always try on trousers before buying as different brands have different lengths and cuttings. If the waist of your trousers sits higher than the belly button, it is too high. On the other hand, trousers should not fall below the pelvic bones. According to Michael Anderson, vice president of men’s apparel at Banana Republic, “A good rule of thumb is that the waist should rest comfortably just above the hip bone.”

4. Stained Clothing
Given the fact that spilling coffee on the shirt happens to all of us, it would be wise to keep a stain stick or a clean shirt in the office as a backup. Otherwise, I would suggest that you simply go out and purchase a new one when a stain occurs.

5. Glittery Shirts
Glittery shirts are a thing of the past even if you are considering wearing them for clubbing purposes. Instead, try a form fitting back shirt which can be worn with jeans or trousers.

6. Anything Novelty
Novelty clothing does not project style and are meant to be left on the racks of the store where you last saw them. Have you ever seen the “Batman Utility Belt”? It’s a belt which you can clip on any communications device or tool you might need. All I can say is “Ewwww….”.

7. Flashy Designer Labels
Unless the designers start paying me huge chunks of money, I wouldn’t want to be walking around with a giant advertisement for a designer label on the front of my dress shirt. Keeping it moderate and simple is the key.

8. Chunky Shoes
Take my word for it, chunky shoes are no longer cool unless you have travelled back in time to the 90s. You have my permission to throw them into the nearest garbage bin.

Usually we talk a lot about Shirts and Ties on this blog (funnily enough!) but we also like to highlight talent in the men’s fashion industry too. This post will feature Philip Lim, the 34 year old fashion designer who was once a design assistant at Katayone Adeli. Hailing from the Orange County, California, this American Fashion Designer is certainly a breathe of fresh air.

In 2004, the once up and coming designer made his solo break with his signature collection 3.1, to correlate with his age at that time. Within one year, he was tapped with a Vogue Fashion Fund nomination. In 2007, Lim was also presented with the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in Womenswear by the CFDA during its 25th Anniversary. Many speculated that his win could be due to his high fashion, ready to wear clothing which was very reasonably priced while others argued that it was the unexpected attention to details and his quirky designs that won the judges. Either way, Philip Lim is definitely a creative genius and designer to watch!

Phillip Lim Cardigan

Spring 2007 saw the introduction of Lim’s springwear collection and the first free standing 3.1 Philip Lim store opened on Mercer Street, in New York City. Recently, one of Lim’s design from his 3.1 Philip Lim was featured on Men.style.com’s “This Season’s 15 Best Sweaters”. Check out his double breasted cabin cardigan, distinctive and colourful, it is definitely this season’s coolest pick. You can view Philip Lim’s collection on his website http://www.31philliplim.com/
