If you haven’t noticed the re-emergence of waistcoats yet – get prepared for it! And we’re not speaking strictly office wear here – the new waistcoat look is teamed with a cool shirt and either dark jeans or trousers. The new dapper is here and it’s a little laid back, oozing with cool.

Since men’s waistcoast started popping up again on the runway shows (including that of Bottega Veneta), the trend has exploded in high street stores and spotted on many a fashionable man in the streets of London. The ultimate proof that waistcoats are back with vengeance? Topman have included 13 different waistcoats in their latest collection in sleek blacks, browns and greys in varying cuts and styles.

How to do the waistcoat look….

Patterned waistcoats:
As a rule of thumb, if your waistcoat is of the pinstriped variety, pair it with a plain colour shirt - whites and creams look pretty savvy.

Plain waistcoats:
Plain waistcoats go great with most shirts. To keep the look contemporary, try a striped shirt like this one from Savile Row, which picks up the grey of the waistcoat with its fine grey stripe.

Still can’t picture it? take a look at this great combo discovered by Manolo Men. Dapper is back for the winter, but take it one step at a time - maybe leave the bowler hat at home for now…

 • I walked through topman last week and ouldn’t decide what waistcoat to go for. Before I wouldn’t of touched them with a barge pole, but hey if they’re rock and roll enough for the likes of Pete Doherty, they’re worth look

 • I like the version you’ve got here. I’ve seen loads of guys wear them with skinny leg jeans and logo t-shirts and that’s a pretty cool look too.

 •
Is this a look we want to be encouraging? I like the waistcoat look as a three piece suit, it looks so sophisticated. But this ‘rock and roll’ look the others are talking about - don’t you think it just cheapens and makes fun of formal dressing?
